Obituary for Mary L. Shelton

Her Story

On July 28, 1938, a bouncing baby girl was born to Leroy and Ruthie Mae Shelton.
They named her Mary, and she was the oldest of eight children born to this union.
Mary was known by Polly, Mae-Mae, Mother Dear, and Granny.
Mary was educated in the Mississippi School System. When she was 15 years old,
the family moved to Chicago, Illinois. Mary was educated in the Chicago Public
School System. She also attended the Presbyterian St. Luke Nursing School (now
RUSH Hospital).
Mary devoted countless volunteer hours to Howland Elementary School, where all
her children and her younger siblings attended. Later, Mary was hired as a teacher's
assistant for many years. Mary worked full-time as a homemaker for 20 years until
her retirement in 2005.
Mary dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and was a member of First Baptist
Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend Cornelius Lemon. Mary
later joined Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral
leadership of the late Reverend Milton Brunson.
Her parents Leroy Sr. and Ruthie Mae, three sons Tony, Ricky, and Stevie,
grandson Danton, great-granddaughter Gabby Marie, great-grandson Ricky Jr, four
brothers, Leroy Jr, Michael, Kevin, and Calvin (aka Gary), her grandparents, aunts,
and uncles proceeded her in death.
While waiting on the launching pad for her direct flight to her new home, she
received clearance for Flight 12-29-2021, where she gained her wings and was
escorted by the angels to her heavenly home.
Mary leaves to carry on her legacy two daughters Pam and Glynis (Kevin), four
sons James (aka Jimmy), Keith, Kenneth, and Troy, two sisters Bette and Debbie,

one brother James, 35 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, ten great-great-
grandchildren, two nieces, five nephews, three special daughters Shirley Banks

Midgett, Brenda Shelton, and Angela Crawford, the staff at St. Joseph Village
Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Sun Crest Hospice Center, and a host of
other great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
