Obituary for Jana K. Hardwick

Luretta was born August 15, 1939, to Luke and Mattie Mitchell in Mound Bayou, Mississippi. She was the third of six children. She graduated from Mound Bayou High School and later moved to Chicago where she attended Wright Jr. College.

While in college she met her husband, Meliche Hardwick, Sr. They would later wed and have six beautiful children. She and Meliche, Sr. were able to purchase a large rental property. Jana eventually managed the property full time after they parted ways. Jana was able to maintain the property, affectionally known as “The Building” for almost 50 years before handing over the responsibility to her son, Jerome.

Jana absolutely loved her children. There were a few treasures that she passed on to her children and they have carried over to their families. Always pray without ceasing. You can do ALL things trough Christ Jesus. Have something sweet after dinner. As kids she made sure there were cookies in the house for them to snack on everyday. Hot breakfast during the week, Pizza on Friday (No Cooking on Friday’s) Cereal on Saturday’s and Sunday dinner at the kitchen table.

Jana was a woman of Unshakable Faith. She made sure that her family had a foundation grounded in the Christian faith. Jana held devotion twice a day in the dining room with her children. When they rose to begin their day and before they went to sleep at night. She taught her children to always pray and trust in Jesus no matter what the situation.
She had been a member of Broadview Baptist Missionary Church for many years under the leadership of Pastor C.W. Hopson. She later joined Living Word Christian Center under the leadership of Pastor Bill Winston. Jana enjoyed listening to Pastor Winston daily.

Even with her illness, she acknowledged God everyday. At any given moment she would say, “God is Good All the Time”, “He makes a way out of no way”, “He’s our Bright and Morning Star for the rest of our days and all of our lifetime”,” I Love You Lord and You Love Us Too.”

After Jana was diagnosed with Dementia in 2019, her children became her caregivers and made sure she was always well taken care of. Jana was very partial to fish sandwiches, sweet juices and cookies.

On the morning of Saturday October 2, 2021, God Granted Jana her rest and called her home to Glory.

Jana is survived by her six children; Meliche Hardwick, Jr.(Anita), Jerome Hardwick (NaTanya), Catrice Giles(Carl), Carla Hardwick, Luretta Hardwick and Archie Hardwick(Alesia); four siblings, Luke, Lucious, Lenora and Mattie.
