Obituary for Avery L. Brooks

Obituary
Avery was gifted to this world on Monday, December 30, 1968. He was the oldest grandchild,
and the first of four children born to his loving and supportive parents, Rutha Mae & the late
Archie Louis Brooks, in Chicago, IL. They taught him the importance and value of family and
how to put them first, behind God.
Avery was a God fearing man who attended Faith, Works & Vision International Ministry under
the leadership of Rev. Harold Washington, where he really enjoyed and boasted about his
spiritual fullness whenever he attended Sunday service.
His educational journey started at Dundee Elementary School in Dundee Mississippi, and
continued in Chicago through Chicago Public Schools, where he attended Goldblatt Elementary,
and Westinghouse high School. Avery held several jobs throughout his life’s journey and no
matter his job title he always gave one hundred and ten percent. He often gave and supported
those in need and never looked for anything in return, that’s just who he was, and for that he will
certainly be missed.
He had a special place in his heart for making sure his “Golden Girls”, his Mama, Aunts Robbie,
& Cheryl, and Ms. Betty took trips whenever they felt the need to travel.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving, and caring mother, Rutha Mae who he simply
called “Mama”; his maternal grandmother Lela Betts, “Mama Shug'' of Memphis, TN; his ”baby
girl”, Brittney of Jacksonville FL.; his son Jonathan (Shawntae) of Rowlett, Texas; three sisters,
Sharron, Dwilette and Kawonda “Kay” (Trevor); one brother, Cedrick; two nieces Adaijah and
Kennedi; one great niece Malayah; two nephews Cedrick “C.J.'' and Malik; five grandchildren,
Jonathan Jr, ”Deuce”, of Toledo, OH, Cayson, Jaylen, Londyn, and Nyla of Rowlett, TX; four
uncles, Melvin, Maurice and Lorenzo Jr., of Memphis, TN, and Eddie of Mississippi; six aunts,
Gloria, Jerrilynn (Jonathan), and Renee of Calumet Park, Cheryl, & Robbie of Chicago, Virgie
of North Las Vegas, NV, and Bernadine (Leroy) of Memphis TN, and one great aunt Claudette
(Johnny) of South Holland. A special woman in his life Diane, her children, Michael, Dishai,
Terreneika, Tatiana & Marcus who looked to him as a father figure, and her grandchildren who
affectionately referred to him as “Pa Pa ''.
Avery touched the lives of so many people, both near and far, older and younger. He has a host
of other special relatives and true friends who are already missing him. He has several “God
Sisters'', and a special group of friends who often refer to him as a “brother from another
mother”. He will be remembered most by his “brown eyes, big heart, caring and supportive
spirit, contagious smile, and his love for family-togetherness”.
